120.8 Million people watched Super Bowl XLIX. This Super Bowl was not deflated (could not resist) in any way. In fact, it will be known as the most watched show in United States TV history. It could be argued that the advertisers paying $4.5 million for a 30-second spot got their moneys worth. I could go on to mention other outstanding facts such as Americans eating over 1,083,33 football fields worth of wings on Super Bowl Sunday but I think the point has been made. What point might you ask? The point that in the culture of America the Super Bowl is a BIG DEAL!
I still feel like I am underselling this point. 120.8 million people tuned in, gathered together, and even threw parties for the Super Bowl. Why is Super Bowl such a big deal? Are 120.8 million people really diehard NFL fans? I believe I can stand on firm ground asserting that this is not the case. Ok then, why is the Super Bowl such a big deal?
I must confess that I am not a psychologist nor am I an expert in sociology but I have a sneaky suspicion that it has to do with God. Am I saying that God is behind the reason why so many people gathered to watch football this past Sunday? In a way, I guess I am. Through my experience in ministry I have discovered that God has created us with a thirst for community. We as beautifully created creatures of God are social beings in need of community, companionship, and above all love.
I know that most of us LOVE to take any excuse to get together, eat and have a good time but 120.8 million people watching a football game at the same time is again…A BIG DEAL! As a pastor I am tempted to be bitter and wish such viewers could be counted for [FILL IN CHRISTIAN EXAMPLE HERE] but the truth is that I am far from bitter; I am actually quite excited. This crazy number of people gathering together represents to me God’s truth that we were not created to WALK THIS EARTH ALONE.
We were created to be in community so let us go into this world joyfully partaking in the beauty of what life truly is. Sure there is going to be some tough days and you might be going through them right now, but there is a God who loves you more then anything in this world and that is worth celebrating. My friends don’t you dare take a day of this life for granted and may you continue to discover how wide, long, high, and deep the love of Christ is for you.
