Five years ago, members of the CUMC mission team were asked by the Lawrence Township Trustees if our church was interested in partnering with other community members to help them open a food pantry for Lawrence Township residents. Our church members have a long history of being in ministry in the Castleton/Lawrence community and we answered with a resounding YES! The Cupboard of Lawrence Township opened in September 2014 and Tony Miller served on the board for three years. Our youth have volunteered during their in-town mission trips; small groups volunteer once a month or as able; individual church members volunteer to help shop, stock pantry shelves, and deliver food to the pantry from our regular church collections. Community Hospital Foundation assumed leadership of the pantry a couple of years ago but is still in need of volunteers and donations of food and funds to serve he ever-growing number of Lawrence Township residents struggling to feed their families. In August 2019, the Pantry provided food to 6,515 people in 1,669 households. The number served grows each year. CUMC continues to help meet those needs because of our congregation’s faithful support of mission giving.
