My hand still hurts thinking about today’s game of catch! This afternoon’s catch brought not one, but two athletes in pitcher Theo Kramer and first baseman Tyre McClain. They are both juniors at Lawrence North High School not far from my church. These guys brought the heat, which was easy for them. They just wrapped up their summer baseball season and now are fully engaged in football. While Theo can throw up to 89mph, I’m pretty sure they both took it easy on me!
Theo is a Reds fan while Tyre is a Yankees fan and both share the hope of playing ball on the collegiate level. The way they were throwing today in an easy game of catch, I wouldn’t be surprised if they make it beyond the college level. For now, they are looking forward to their junior year of football, which includes a trip to Lucas Oil Stadium where the Colts play for a game early next month. Their favorite memories on the baseball field are turning double plays and hitting home runs.
I asked them before we left if I would be able to make the team next year. Theo smiled and said, “yeah,” but I’m pretty sure he was being nice. I appreciated his kind gesture, but I’m probably going to stick to my day job pastoring and my side gig being a baseball coach of my son’s YMCA league team.
I do hope to catch a football game or two this fall to cheer on the Wildcats! When the spring comes, you can be sure that I’ll come out to cheer on my new baseball friends Theo, Tyre, and their teammates when they take the field.
