“There’s no crying in baseball” and there are no rain delays in 30 days of catch! Lu Pelsor, a member of my church, was kind enough to take me up on my offer to play catch today at the church even with the looming possibility of rain. We played half the time with a baseball and the other half with a softball. Lu has played both, so it made sense to split the time. Even with a light drizzle and eventually a steady rain, it was still so nice to have a midday game of catch.
Lu grew up closer to Cincinnati and so naturally a Reds fan! I heard such lovely memories of listening to the Reds game on the radio with her grandma as the sun was setting. She would chase fireflies on the porch as they would listen to the final pitch. I can picture the beautiful scene of summer in rural Indiana listening to baseball. Her grandma would take a spiral bound notebook to keep the players stats of the Reds games.
I also had a first during our game of catch. Lu said that I look like Joey Votto, the 39-year-old first baseman and future hall of famer of the Reds. I might look like him, but I don’t think I can throw and definitely not bat like him. I’ll take the compliment though!
Even though the traffic on nearby 465 and Shadeland Ave was buzzing behind our game of catch, that didn’t distract us from our catches or throws or our conversation. While we may differ in who we cheer for in baseball, we share a common love of the game and jazz. It’s fun to share about the concerts we’ve been to and the amazing musicians we have both seen live in concert. We shared our first game of catch today, but I am looking forward to our first jazz concert sometime in the not-so-distant future, I hope.
It was so nice to just play in the middle of our work day and before we volunteer down the street with Gleaners. Lu has been a regular volunteer for our Monday food distributions. She has a servant’s heart and serves our church in many different ways. I’m thankful for her service, faith, laugh, and willingness to play.
I’ll be sharing some stories on this blog throughout the month of August. I hope you are enjoying following my journey of 30 days of catch!
A quick update on the financial fundraiser for Gleaners. As of this afternoon, we are almost to $14,000. My goal is $15,420. We’re almost there!
