I have been noticing lately how there is a lot of conversation in the hallways of Castleton UMC along with a lot of laughter. This is true on Sunday mornings, but it’s also true during the week. Our staff spends a lot of time together. We enjoy each other’s company. We discuss, we work, and we laugh often.
Chris Croyts, our Director of Discipleship, often reminds our Table Group leaders and other ministry leaders that we are to simply take time to enjoy each other’s company. I really appreciate Chris’ reminder. Yes, our study of Scripture and prayer together is important, but so is building deep relationships to the point where we truly enjoy each other’s company.
I invite you to spend a few extra minutes before or after a meeting or study or worship. Just spend some time with friends and introduce yourself to someone you don’t know.
There are many references in Scripture to joy and even laughter. Here are two examples:
Genesis 21:6: “And Sarah declared, ‘God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me.’”
Job 8:21: “He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.”
We read of joy and laughter even in Job. After everything he had gone through, he would once again have his mouth filled with laughter and shouts of joy.
I believe a sign of a healthy church can be found in a congregation that is loud and alive with lots of conversation and laughter. I hear that every Sunday morning. And I am thankful for that!
