Generosity creates reciprocity, especially for local businesses. You don't need a huge marketing budget to make your small business known in your community. All you need is some time and a desire to help others. A great way to get your name out there if you're a local business is by participating in the good others are already doing. For example, a dozen or so staff from Community Health Network have served the last few weeks at the mobile food bank I help lead. It costs their employer basically nothing for them to leave work a couple of hours early, and it positions them as a compassionate brand in our community. Sure, CHN is a huge employer in our city, and they have some requirements for staff to do community service hours. But... What is stopping your small business from doing the same? Spend a few hours each month doing some good in your community. It's a great way to meet new people, grow your network, and endear yourself and your business to your neighbors. It's also simply a good thing to do. Share your work on social media, or even better, let the organizations you partner with share it (it's always better when others talk about how great you are). Here are a few ideas to consider if you live in Indianapolis. Similar opportunities exist wherever you live and can be found with a simple Google search. - Distribute food with Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana - Help with beautification work with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. - Help refugees with Exodus Refugee Immigration - Mentor youth through outdoor adventure with Camptown, Inc. - Spruce up homes with NeighborLink Indianapolis - Build new homes with Habitat for Humanity of Indiana - Help end youth homelessness with Outreach Indiana There are a million other opportunities out there for you and your business. People want to support organizations that participate in the transformation of their community.
