Lenten Series

As Christians we follow a guy named Jesus, from the town of Nazareth, who walked this earth 2000 years ago. Sady, there is a strong tendency to make this Jesus in our own image, to fashion Him into what we want Him to be like, to focus on the things He said that we easily agree with and to ignore some of the more challenging things He said.

In order to fight that tendency, we spend time during the season of Lent to focus on one of the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry. Two years ago we went through Luke. Last year we went through John. This year we’re going through the fast-paced, action-packed Gospel of Mark.

Mark offers us a paradox: on the one hand Mark demonstrates Jesus’ power and authority; on the other hand Mark presents Jesus to be a humble, sacrificial servant. All the while, we are invited to reexamine our presumptions about Jesus and to renew our allegiance to Jesus, the Servant King.
