Weekend of Witness to End ICE Detention at Miami Correctional Facility

Sunday, August 30 | 12:00 PM

On August 28-30, congregations across Indiana will be hosting prayer vigils and making their voices heard against the inhumane and unjust detainment of immigrants at the Miami Correctional Facility (a.k.a. The Speedway Slammer). CUMC, which has been involved in this issue for the past year, will be joining the effort by hosting a prayer vigil/prayer walk on Sunday, August 30.

After the second service, we will eat a quick bite (please bring your own lunch; drinks and dessert will be provided). Then we will pray in a couple of different ways. You can choose to prayerwalk (on 71st street, from Shadeland to Hague and back), or for those with mobility issues, you can stay and pray on campus (outside, near the intersection of 71st and Shadeland) If it rains we will pray in the sanctuary.

We encourage people to make (respectful) signs: pro-neighbor, pro-justice, pro-human dignity. You can make a poster at home, or you’ll have an opportunity to make one prior to heading out to pray.

As God’s people, we want to:

  • Lend our voice to the voiceless
  • Raise awareness of the issue
  • Publicly declare where we stand
  • Beseech God to intervene on behalf of our immigrant neighbors
  • Seek an end to ICE Detention at the Miami Correctional Facility

We have been asking the question, What if Jesus was serious about Justice? Now, as a matter of public witness, we’re inviting our neighbors in the community to ask this question too.

Kids Church

Teachers Needed
Kids Church (Pre-K through 5th Grade) has started the new school year using Sparkhouse Whirl Classroom lessons. Whirl Classroom engages kids with easy-to-follow lessons based on Bible stories. The program provides short animated videos and pre-planned lessons with games, activities, and discussion questions that help kids seek faith and understanding through the Bible’s message. We are always welcoming new teachers. Please contact the church office to learn more about teaching. Teachers choose which weeks they are available and which age group they would like to teach.
