Music That Makes Community
March 6-8 | One Worship Service at 10:00 AM on Sunday, March 8
Many of us know what it feels like to sing near other people, but not always with them. Far worse, we wish to “make a joyful noise” but we fear how that might sound.
Rooted in Christian contemplative and activist traditions, Music That Makes Community invites worshippers, congregants, musicians, and song leaders into a three-day experience of communal singing. Together, we explore how singing can heal our spirits, nurture our shared life, and help us imagine a more just world.
This gathering is especially for worshippers and congregants, including those who don’t think of themselves as singers or musicians. Trained musicians, choral singers, clergy, and music leaders are also warmly invited. We come together to explore more participatory, community-centered ways of making music.
Over the weekend, we will sing, listen, move, and learn together in spaces designed as laboratories of learning, discovery, and communal joy. These are not performances or lectures, but shared practices rooted in curiosity, playfulness, deep listening, and embodied participation.

Matthew: The Story of the Messiah
New Session Begins Monday, February 9 | 1:00-3:00 PM
One of the newer traditions we have at CUMC is going through one of the Gospel accounts during Lent. We continue this tradition this year by going through The Gospel of Matthew. While we didn’t plan it this way, it is interesting that now, as we’re seeing a rise in Anti-Semitism in the world, we would be studying the most Jewish of all the Gospel accounts. Matthew was written by a Jew, to Jews, about a Jew…who is the long-awaited Messiah, the King of the world, God-with-us.
The very Jewishness of Jesus is on full display in Matthew. More than the other Gospel accounts, Matthew links Jesus to the story of the Old Testament and presents Jesus as the fulfillment of the promises and prophecies therein. This Jewish Messiah is the light of all nations. Join us as we dive into The Story of the Messiah in our worship services and table groups this Lenten season.

Be. Now.
If you have been touched by God to yearn for a direct relationship with our Creator and need help developing discernment and discipline, this fellowship may be for you. We will follow Jesus Christ as His apprentices and put into practice your spiritual gifts and more. The exercises and techniques we will practice are not for those who are merely curious, afraid to change, or are content with their vocation and spiritual life. The only requirement is to have an open mind, a loving heart, and a desire to be closer to God’s love.
In a small, sharing, caring community you can expect to learn exercises for sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and empathy with others. Paths can be followed for discovering your spiritual gifts and how you perceive our world. Your beginning steps start a journey into God’s Kingdom of love and continuing creation. Your expectation should be to engage in contemplation, know yourself, Be Now, and above all else – experience God.
This is a 6-month weekly course based on actions and experiences. It will meet on Wednesday evenings (start date, time, and place TBD), led by Dan Cooper. If interested, or for more information, contact the church office.
